The Birmingham Civic SocietyTree

The Heritage Committee was formed as part of the new committee structure initiative of November 2004. It was assigned the duties of maintaining the Heritage Buildings Guide, overseeing the award and placement of Blue Plaques and initiating a new scheme of History Plates around the city.

Heritage Buildings Guide

This guide to forty of the City's most interesting buildings was first published by the Society in 2003. It is distributed locally in hotels, libraries, museums, galleries etc and nationally through the Tourist Information Centres. To date over 400,000 copies have been distributed, making it one of the three most sought after guides to the Birmingham area. The guide is due to be reprinted next in 2007.

History Plates

The committee will seek to raise funds for an extensive range of History Plates throughout the city; the original intention was to produce 25 text-based Plates with the assistance of a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and to this purpose a list of fifty possible sites and subjects was produced by Malcolm Dick (a member of the Citizenship Committee) and Peter Leather, from which a selection might be made; however, it has been decided to investigate the possibility of entering into a partnership with other heritage organisations so that a much larger project might be attempted with a view to putting up as many plates/panels as possible to the best and most attractive specifications affordable
